Agenda 2030: a critical reflection on the goals (not) achieved

Antonio Garofalo's editorial opens issue 2 of December 2025 of the Review of Studies on Sustainability, a publication that offers tools for analysis and reflection on the major issues of contemporary sustainable development. This issue offers a lucid and critical reading of the progress of the United Nations' 2030 Agenda.
With less than five years to go before the deadline for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, the editorial immediately highlights an alarming fact: according to the latest international assessments, only 18% of global targets are now realistically achievable by 2030. Garofalo emphasizes that this is not simply a technical delay, but a sign of a deeper crisis affecting the ability of political, economic, and institutional systems to steer development toward truly sustainable models.
The editorial thus introduces the central themes of the issue, drawing attention to the crisis of global governance, persistent social and economic inequalities, the climate emergency, and growing geopolitical tensions. These interconnected issues, if addressed in a fragmented manner, risk compromising any path towards sustainable transition. Hence the urgent need for a paradigm shift: more coherent policies, strengthened international cooperation, and structural investments capable of having a long-term impact are needed.
Il numero di dicembre della Review of Studies on sustainability raccoglie contributi che affrontano queste sfide da una prospettiva sistemica. Gli articoli esplorano il ruolo dell’innovazione tecnologica e della digitalizzazione come leve strategiche per lo sviluppo di infrastrutture resilienti, capaci di sostenere la transizione energetica, la produzione responsabile e l’azione per il clima. Altri contributi si concentrano sulla sostenibilità sociale e istituzionale, analizzando politiche e pratiche orientate alla riduzione delle disuguaglianze, al rafforzamento della partecipazione civica e alla costruzione di istituzioni più trasparenti e inclusive.
Ampio spazio è dedicato anche ai comportamenti individuali e collettivi, con riflessioni su stili di vita sostenibili, riduzione degli sprechi, mobilità responsabile e tutela degli ecosistemi.
